this started happening when it got really cold, but hasn't stopped since then. when i go over a bump there is a squeak from the suspension. it makes the noise under compression, but not when it extends back to normal ride height. is there any way to tell whether it is the bushings, or the shocks?

You can check the bushings to make sure there still there. Sometimes endlinks get torn and need to be replaced. Metal on metal equals squeak. Your shocks could be going to. Check for oil leaks around the shock.
