I'm changing the color of my car from this gay maroon red to either black or flat grey but i'm wondering if any of the body shop techs here have any info on the prep work needed for such a job? Since it's a change, i know i'm pretty much going to have to strip the car (engine and such, paint the jambs and all that) in order for it not to look cheeseball, but how do i get the paint off in the first place? Is it something that i can do in a timely manner? I mean i know they used to sandblast to srtip it down to bear metal, which i'm going to do, to re-primer the whole car but is this the modern method or is it just hours and hours of sanding being done? Thanks Guys,

-Garrett

im going to make the same sugestion to you that i did to pat when he started working on his project....

AIRCRAFT.... you can get a gallon for like $15.-$20. an it works very fast.. i stripped the paint of of my car in one day an had it readyto paint primer that night... it is very pottent shit though.. gets on your skin you will deffinatly know it... also you have to remove everything from he car that you dont want to get fucked up.... (plastics, wires an such) it will eat them to shit an you will have to replace them...

no help with the paint stripping, but make it a really nice shinny black. i think the flat grey looks like a low budget excuse.

the only suggestion i have is if you use aircraft paint stripper, make sure you wash over it several several times i mean like 3 or 4 times, my friend re painted his hood and used that stuff and mustve been he didnt wash it off thoroughly enough cause about 3 months later the paint and primer peeled off in large spots, kinda made his hood look like some of the lavender neons where the paint peels off in chunks LOL

i dont think that was do to none efficiant washing offness, that sounds ike he did no scuff the bair metal down well enough... if you dont prep the metal then it will still peelup... an when you do use that shit, an go to rnse off thecar after.... do not use soap, an make sure that it dont site over night like that(sripped down that is)... thi is because youu will have what is called flashing occure... (this is when the metal oxadises) even though you cant see it there will be small traces of rust an this will cause the pint t peel over a small amout oftime..... iknow from experiance...trial an era... :D

but tanks for reminding me abuot that.. i almost forgot...

then you gotta go back and sand the whole fricken surface over. Fun stuff huh. I liked to poor water on the car that my friend was working on ever time he came and messed with the shit I was working on. Eye for an eye

Im gonna back up what JDM said. Ive seen the aircraft shit used but have no experience with it. Yes make sure to scuff everything down really well, dont miss anything.

Personally, if your going to go and repaint your whole car to the point where you want to pull your motor and take out everything, make sure you do a great job. Theres no point to repainting everything if you dont plan on making it look like money. Your probally talking about a job that most body shops will charge you 3-8 grand for (it all depends on how much your looking to get done and how much needs to be done). Unless you like macoo, theyll paint your car for you cheap but dont expect it to be perfect .

No i definetly want it to look great, but what i think might be a money saver is doing all the prep work myself, although it might take awhile to strip down the whole car and such, it's worth it with how much i would save in having someone else do it. Getting the motor out is no problem cause by the time i'm ready to paint the car i should have the h22a swap well on it's way to being done, so it'll have to come out anyways. As far as the paint stripper, damn that shit sounds real real harsh. How long does it take to work, compared to sanding? Is the output going to be as clean and reliable as opposed to if i sand-blasted ur something. thanks for all your help on this one guys...
