4wd is usually used with trucks or SUV's, and usually turned on and off manually, not always tho. This means most of the time just the rear wheels are powering it. All wheel drive is like what an EVO 8 has, all four wheels are always powered, not only when you want them to be. That's how i distinguish between the two anyway.
yea 4wd usually is just distributing between the back and rear axles or is like a fixed 60-40 distribution, all wheel like Audi's Quattro shifts power between all four wheels where it is needed. And you know it works cause if u ever watching german touring cars when they first take off, all u see is all the audi's jump into the middle and outside because they get such great launches.
