ive completely checked out of school for the week (not being there mentally, but physically, yes); so im finally starting to put my project into forward motion. the actual painting ive got down (since ive been part of similar projects numerous times), but what confuses me is how to pop off the lens to the headlights and the taillights... baking of course works, but would somoene verify the temperatures to set at and how long you need to set it in foir for the headlights and taillights?

much appreciated for any two cents.

ummm i would seriuosly avoid baking them if you could, it can warp and turn the plastic yellow. rent a heat gun, 10 bucks a day from any rental shop. blow heat at it around 500-600 degrees about 4-5 inches away from the edges, this will make the glue all sticky and you can pull the lense off with the help of a screwdriver to pry it up. make sure to take off the 4 little silver clasps that hold it on too though.

for the tail lights...thats a dif story, i tried my damndest to get the freaking plastic cover off but i couldnt get it, i dont think honda intended for them to ever come off after they were put together cuz i screwed with that thing for like 45 minutes and couldnt get it apart...

the oem tails will not come apart i purpusly shattered an old one at a junk yard with a hammer an a heat gun an still wouldnt come apart... besides if you are painting the tails, it is the outside that you paint not the inside like the headlights....

Im assuming the tails are the same as the corner lamps...not the sticky type of adhesive as on the headlights. I had to bake my corner lamps and all that did was warp the socket holes. Paint the outide and clear coat if ya have to.

Unless your Chef Boyardi or Betty Crocker....leave the oven for cakes and cookies :feedme: Leave your headlights for heat guns.

i baked both.....350 for 5-10mins on headlights and 5-7mins on tails....tails came apart with a little more trouble....but wasnt too bad....never tried using a heat gun cuz the oven worked fine....but a heat gun may work alright also

hahaha..comedy....i wish i would've listen to ya' before the oven thing tho'...the yellow is clearing little by little as im waxing the lenses w/ the wax-as-u dry everyweek...i might just darken it out a little more once the yellow is almost inexistant and when the storms stop coming...

well, the taillights came off fine, which i was happy about... =) preheat at 300 for about 7 min then bake for about 6-8 min... the reason for taking off the taillight lens is to take off the amber/clear lens that were inside it... i have a nagging doubt i shouldnt of taken off the clear lens inside, as it was there for light reduction for drivers behind me (somoene wanna clarify this for me, that would be awesome)... but then agian, this wont affect ME, juss people BEHIND me, so they can all burn in hell. now, the hellacious journey to find kandy brandy wine-like paint for those taillights...

as for the headlights, my friend's brother works for autobacs and can get me jdm style headlights for 175ish... 1 1/4 of a paycheck.. =)

and for the corners and side markers, im really going either way with them. any opinions?

well if you can get the real stanleys for $175.ish then deffanitley get them they should come with corners as well... most of the time they do.... if you are going with the jdm look you deffanitly do not wanna go euro corners...

as for the paint for the tails, you dont need to fork out alot of cash for candy brandy wine paint... go to a hobby store/arts and crafts store.. an get KRYLON's 6oZ. stained glass color... comes in red/yellow/orange/green/blue/purple.. an also in smokey colors as listed above as well plus silver...

an for that little yellow/orange plastic peice in the tails, it is not for light reduction, it is to make the bulb flash amber... as long as you have an amber or red bulb flashing in the rear then you are ok..... it is not going to be blinding ppl at all.. plus removal of clear amber peice= free jdm tail lights.....

nah...if u take apart the tail lenses completely...there is a clear plastic peice in the upper area of the tails(maybe lower too...its been a while).....i think it refracts the light inside the tail....i compared what they looked like with and without them b4 i sealed them back and i decided to put mine back in....but i dont think it makes a whole lot of difference...

...and i think he meant 175 for the depo jdm headlights.....i think the depos come with the jdm corners....which look perfect w/ the headlights...should look like these.....

for sidemarkers...when it warms up...im gonna be putting in some amber s2000 stanley markers....i run amber bulbs all around anyway cuz i like the look better....but its all personal preference as far as that goes...im debating goin w/ oem bumper lights....but depends on what deals i can find

cramer's right on the money with those headlights... =) im most likely gonna go after that, since my friends brother can hook it up...

for the bumper/sidemarkers, im thinking about going oem status (with the touchup of orange, for no apparent reason)... seeing those are pretty orgasmic when done right...

i thought it wasnt for light reduction, but there was a nagging doubt, juss wanted to clarify. so, with that out of the way, i need a new way to blind the drivers behind me.. ><"

have you seen the new euro tails that they got out now... they are all L.E.D. they look pretty hot but i dont know if that is what im wanting myslef, since im doing the jdm thing.... but they are nice an bright im sure..... an as for the bumper lights i think the ambers look alot better like you said, i just bought the clear bumpers so that i could paint them with the KRYLON glass paint an painted them amber so that they are very very clear orange an man they are nice looking just like last time that i did it... not as dull looking as the stockys...

i dont mind the looks of the leds tails too much....but i would rather make my own.....well....that is...figure out how and make my own :) cuz they look kinda cheesy....id rather have leds insdie stock tails....which someone on hondasociety has done but it was a little mess figuring it all out.....who knows...maybe ill get a nice amoutn of free time and whip some out.....im kinda partial tho...the stock tails look sooo damn goood

as for the paint, im prollie gonna go with krylon stained glass paint, then clear coat... ive already secured jdm style headlights (not projection, thank god) at autobacs, so im going monday to get them, then install that same night. painting of the taillights, sidemarkers, and bumper lights will take place this weekend, and once all are installed, i shall link you guys to pics.

and yes, blinding people is hella fun. =)

good luck on your project yo...

what?!
02-22-2005, 10:46 AM
.ok so for 94-95 fifth gens, you can heat up the edges of the tails like you would opening the headlights and they should come off fine? i want to take that amber off too. i've heard of people taking the ambers off with a saudering iron and some needlenose pliers or some equivalent of the two. also, painting the inside would be pretty cool...

.well gl with the headlights. if they say stanley on them and have horny nipples, they should use 9005/6 right? if no stanley/no horny nipples, then they're depo, then i think they're h3/4. have fun...

I didn't do it like that cuz this one guy down the street did it and ended up cracking the taillights, I'm assuming the heat gun got the lenses too hot or something. Anyways, I just used a head gun to heat up some needle nose pliers and reached inside to start rolling the amber reflector being that it becomes plyable when hot. I eliminated any possible scratching of the chrome or cracking of the tail light lenses.

ugh... sorri for the long absense... well, the project went great, and i shall be putting up pics soon. but as for peoples ways of getting the amber lens out, its all about preferences. each have their trade off... seperating the tails from each other and removing the amber lens is harder, and run a higher risk of cracking, but with patience and a steady hand, itll be clean. as for ricanstylez idea, thats also good and less damaging, but the amber piece might scratch all over inside if im not mistaken...? =/

I dont think anyone has taken that amber piece out the same way to be honest. It IS all about preference and just trial and error. I scratched up the silver on the first tail but on the second it came out perfect. Painting the scratches back to silver shouldnt be an issue.

Yeah I was gonna say, worse case scenario is to just get some gray or whatever color it is paint and just repaint the inside walls. Luckily I didn't scratch my tails.

MAD SKILLS! I wish I could say the same but I only scratched up the first one.

all you pplz from usa are lucky. used parts are readily availible!! if i tried that with my oem's and f'ed them all up i would be stuck going to honda and payin hella cash for new ones. lol i went the safe route and picked up some cf taillights (they look sweet on a mettalic black accord) and 1pc black housing projectors!! installed with led bulbs . . looks so clean. only thing u gotta watch out for is don't buy cheap tail or head light housings cuz when they leak they look like crap. and they blow bulbs like a mofo.

Junk yards are becoming bigger bitches than the dealerships lol. Ive said this before but i had a junk yard try to sell me one headlight missing the outer lens cover for $85. WTF is up with that. Sucks ya cant get someone in the US to look out for ya.
