Recently my motors been having a surging idle at startup. It didnt do it in the summer, but now that winter is around for the first 5 minutes or about untill the motor warms up, the cars idle surges from about 900rpm to 2k.
What would be the cause of this (besides the cold) and is it a simple fix or will I need to take it to a professional mechanic.

i think the engine just does that to warm up the engine b/c once it's warm it stops surging right? it's kinda cold in milwaukee correct, b/c i'm on the east coast n when it's like say 40 or below it revs high until it's warmed up for 5mins or so. i don't think it's any trouble

Your Idle Air Control Valve may be shot. It controls your idle when the AC or other accessories are turned on, including the kick down when it's warming up. My car does the same thing when it's cold. You can get them at places like Pepboys or Autozone and range from around $210 to $260. A little spendy for a vacuum controled valve but if you want to stop your idle from surging go for it.

Hi...
Recently, I had exactly the same problem with my 91 LX. Went to the junk yard took the EACV and a throttle body (just in case :) ) off the same car, paid $15, spent about 15-30 min. changing the parts and it has fixed the problem....

Check all your vacuum lines and replace them, that usually fixes the problem on any car

If you have a fuel-injected Honda, don't do it - - - never spray Carburetor Cleaner of Ether into the throttle body. Why? The fumes will make their way to the MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) Sensor and will cause it to burn out.

read right I SAID THROTLE BODY CLEANER NOT CARBURATOR CLEANER. yes it can be done just keep ur car running and spray the throthe body with "THROTLE BODY CLEANER" some od it is going to spill back out just wipe it off with a rag. but get more info on what ur problem is we are not there to check it out so it makes it difficult to note what it might be post more details

turns out I was low on coolent, added that and it dosnt surge anymore. Reason being is because I found a small leak, but I think it has something to do with the water pump because its right by that area, I think the pervous owner never did the last major service on it so that means timing belt and water pump need to get done. :( sucks but o well. hope I find time to do it.
