yup what he said...
go to the local parts store get a fillter an 4 quarts of oil.. go home lift the car pull the oil pan plug drain the oil, also take off the oil filter located above the oil pan... visible from under the car... take that off replace with new one, an place the plug back as well once all oill is drained... once everything is back in place take off the vavle cap an put oil in, replae oil, start car let run for 10 seconds, lower car back down an then go on your marry way.. light should be off ofter this... most likley the light is n because the oil is low, very low...

If you have an ex you're going to need 4.5 quarts of oil. Also take the oil filler cap off before you drain to oil from the pan b/c it will make everything flow out easier. One more tip, before you put the new filter on makes sure you put a ring of USED motor oil around the gasket thats on the oil filter. Good luck

One more thing. I doubt that the oil light is going to go off just if you change the oil. There should be a key hole on your dashboard right under the speedometer. You should be able to fit your ignition key in there and that should reset the idiot light.

ya well if you are over by like 2k miles an it is still all pretty much there, then i guess that means that your engine is not burning oil that much, wich intern is a good thing i guess...
as for the 4.5quarts for the ex, why does it call for 1/2 quart more ?? i never heared of that one... im not doubting you, i was just wondering this....
an yes i forgot to mention the oil around the new filter part, this is so that it will not bond with the block when it gets hot an it creats a seal so that the oil does not leak an ish like that... at least that is what i was always told...!!
an removing the cap is always a good way to get the job done faster for sure... it breaks that vacume afect inside the block making the flow of draining fluids quicker.....
an yes you do have to reset the "idiot light" as you put it, but that is not what makes the oil light go off, that just resets the oil change indacater... but all keypoints n canging the oil though.... :p

Thanks for all the replies but, i ckecked the oil level on the dip stick and it's at the max level. :( and my next oil change isn't due until the end of the month. What might be causing this problem.

1> make sure your checking you oil when your car is cold, not after it has warmed up...
2> your poil light might be coming on due to a pressure situation, what happened to me once is what they call slugs* (coagulated clumps in the oil) will get caught in the oil filter causing the pressure to raise periodically
