Does anyone have experience with vin number window etching. I just bought a kit bc my insurance will give me a break more than the alarm or lo-jack.

Dealers charge $300 plus but rarely do them. I bought a kit for 25.00 and am going to give it a try this weekend bc its too cold now and will post pics. I may start a business with this. What it is is that you etch with chemicals your vehicle's vin # (that number on the plate by your windshield) into all of your windows and get an insurance discount bc the thief thus cannot sell the whole vehicle bc the vin number is in every window and his cheap ass will not replace every window including the windshield. He can scrape off the vin # on the plate and sticker on your door panel but not the windows. SMART HEY?

yea I noticed that on my car, there is Vin#'s everywhere, trunk, window, inside of the car, inside by the engine

But not on the windows! Thus the thief can remove all those stickers and sell your car whole which he wants to do!

I never knew that until now. If thats the case, then its hella easy to do. I took an art class in 10th grade and we learned how to etch mirrors. We traced an object or drawing onto some wax-like tracing paper, cut out the parts we wanted to etch, and then we used this acid stuff that looks like already made oatmeal and spread it over the parts we wanted etched. After waiting for about 20 min. We took the mirrors and rinsed them off with water. Then waalaaa, we had etched mirrors. I'm wondering if that is a similar process.

All cars should have that. Cops in Denver are starting to set up bait cars! I saw a documentary where in the city that they did that thefts dropped by 66%.

i'd rather not have numbers all over my car though on the windows...i'd put em in the lower rear corner or something so i wouldnt see them very much.
i dunno i just dont like the idea of etching into my windows. besides with my tint it'd be hard to even see them anyway.

Its about 3.5 cm long. I have to do it bc its the only way I get an insurance break. Don't have tinted windows and don't know if it would work with that; probably not. I don't think you guys realize how important this is. If you have this done the thief can't sell the car whole (probably only in Mexico) bc he would have to replace every window in your car which would wipe out his profit margin. He can scrape off every printed version in your car. I will do it on one window this weekend bc the weather will be fine and if it works I will do all of them. Will post pics.

i park in a garage and usually never am in any high crime/auto theft areas so its not really an issue for me. and i dont think my insurance would care or not.

i thought that when the dealers did it u couldn't even see the etching on with a special light or when a chemical was poured over it, not sure but my friend that had an 03 civic had that done but she sold the car so now i can't check it out
