I only have a vague idea of how these work. Im seeing that most people have them upgraded in their car, curious what aftermarket ones do better etc if anyone can fill me in. Thanks

An aftermarket or re-ground camSHAFT will change around the heights of the valves, giving more gas before combustion, and then letting the exhuast get out quicker after combustion.. The camGEAR is hooked up to your camSHAFT and hooked up to the drive shaft with the timing belt. When the drive shaft spins, it spins the camshaft via the cam gear. If you put on a lighter cam gear, you will be putting slightly less resistance on the engine, and could get a bit better of a response on the engine because of that. not a huge deal, but if you're going to be throwing a lot of money into the engine, including crower rods, pistons, camshafts ect... you would want to do it since its so cheap and will make a difference, even if its minimal. If your not doing much to the engine, dont really worry about it, you wont notice a difference.

Stick with AEM if you are going to change your cam gear and pulleys. Also if you want a big difference. Don't spend too much money on your F22. Save you money and get H series motor. You will be spending more money on a F22 motor to get a lot of power when you can just get an H series and spend a little and get a lot of power. But I know the H series motor is not cheap. but if you want a little more power out of your F22 just worry about cam gear, pulleys, platinum spark plugs, bigger Spark plug wires, cold air intake, headers, and exhaust. If you change all that you should at least gain 30 hp.

Yeah im not spending a whole lot on this car, my mechanic said it would cost 4-5 grand do buy a H22 and do the swap, sounding VERY tempting. I think im gona wait awhile, this engine is only at 114K. Later on, depending on my car condition ill either get something new, or go for the H22.

You mentioned bigger spark plug wires, how much do those run, is the install simple? Sounds like an easy upgrade, not sure how exactly how it helps.

Get MSD spark plug wires. They should cost any where from $50 to $80. All you want to do is get a low resistance so it is easier to creat a stronger spark. Also don't get bigger spark plug wires unless you don't have platinum spark plugs. With this mod you might only get 1-5 hp more. Also you are not going to fill a difference of power unless you add at least 10 hp.
